“Success” is based on Latin roots meaning “an advance, a coming up; a good result, happy outcome.” When one person advances after another person in a line, an elected office, a job or other structure, we say the new person succeeds the former person.
But when most people use the word “success,” they have a broader meaning such as wealth, fame or power. People who have all three like Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos and Warren Buffet (who are also some of the world’s richest people) are considered highly successful. Singers, actors and other entertainers, sports stars and many others in the public spotlight who make millions of dollars and have legions of fans are also considered successful by society’s standards.
But it’s more important to determine what success means for you and what you want to pursue, knowing that it will take work.
Success for you and others might include getting a new job, earning more money, achieving some personal best, earning high grades in school, becoming a better cook, achieving spiritual peace, driving to a distant destination – any human endeavor where energy is expended toward achieving a desired end result or process.
However, this website is not primarily about earning better grades, making better food or taking long trips without getting lost – although those can be secondary benefits. This website is subtitled “How To Be Successful In Life” because the focus is on your life as a whole. It takes a long view and a big-picture perspective – anything that can help your life, mind, body, spirit, relationships, business and more.
Ultimately “success” can mean anything you want it to mean. It’s your life. Just understand that we’re considering your life as a whole, in all its major aspects, over a number of years.
